Pray with Expectancy

‘Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us.’ Ephesians 3:20

It’s good to be reminded that we pray to a God who is ‘able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine’. In Ephesians 3:20, Paul focuses on the internal work of God in our lives, that is  God’s power within us. What is that power? As we have already seen, it is the same power that raised Christ from the dead and seated Him at His right hand, far above all principalities and opposing forces. The full weight of this is brought out more fully in the Amplified Bible’s translation: ‘God is able to [carry out His purpose and] do superabundantly, far over and above all that we [dare] ask or think [infinitely beyond our highest prayers, desires, thoughts, hopes, or dreams].’

This is so amazing that it’s worth pausing on each phrase one at a time:

  • God is able to do what we ask.
  • God is able to do all that we ask.
  • God is able to do all that we ask or imagine.
  • God is able to do more than all that we ask or imagine.
  • God is able to do much more than all we ask or imagine.
  • God is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine.

In light of this, we can be assured that as we pray, God is greater than any problem we face. He is greater than any sin, greater than any sickness, greater than any strife, and greater than any obstacle that we face, either in our lives or in the lives of those around us.

    • Let’s take some time to overflow in gratitude and worship to our God Almighty, who is far beyond our comprehension and understanding, and who moves in consistent abundance, power, and creativity to work all things together for His plan and purposes.
    • Allow the Holy Spirit to reset our focus and perspective as we worship – let faith start to rise afresh as we realign our thoughts and limitations in the light of who He is.
    • Let’s bless our church to release the sound of audacious prayers over our family, our neighbourhoods, our nation, and our world, and let’s declare that we will see immeasurably more than we could ever ask or imagine as God moves in power!
